Description: | Glass mount; 34.8 x 24.6 Inscr. [by Rosalind Birnie Philip]; "Paris" CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) A model would find it difficult to hold a pose like this for long, therefore this pastel must have taken a number of sittings to complete. It can be compared to "A woman holding a black fan" (MacDonald 1995 (1377), GLAHA 46184) as there are similarities of technique, such as the use of diagonal shading and broken outlines.
Birnie Philip Gift 1935 - not lendable. |
