Description: | CRE WHISTLER, Beatrix; (English; 1857-1896) From before her marriage, Beatrix Whistler used a version of the clover or trefoil, made out of 'B' and a reversed 'P' (for Beatrix Philip), as her personal monogram. She used it to sign her prints (GLAHA 50216, 45151). After their marriage in 1888, Whistler liked to draw his butterfly monogram with her trefoil, to produce a symbol of them together. Whistler wrote to Lady Colin Campbell in 1888: 'For You know the Trixie is my 'Luck' - - and see how well the trefoil and the butterfly belong -' (Whistler Correspondence, Whistler to Lady Colin Campbell, [22 June 1888], GUL C12; GUW 00511, (2004-12-08)). 'Trixie' and 'Luck' were nicknames for his wife. The simple lines and brushwork of this watercolour are rather like those of GLAHA 46483.
