"103" CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) PRINT DELATRE, Auguste; Paris (French; 1822-1907) CRE HADEN, Francis Seymour, Sir; (English; 1818-1910) The sitter is Whistler's niece, Annie Haden, and it is likely that she sat for him during a period of recuperation which Whistler spent in the Hadens' home in early 1858. This drawing was done directly from nature and captures the restless reluctance of the young girl to sit for her portrait. The etching is in its fifth state and has been altered by Francis Seymour Haden, Whistler's brother-in-law and Annie's father. Haden assumed the role of mentor in artistic matters to Whistler and did not approve of the way in which Whistler failed to complete the legs of his portrait. Haden took it upon himself to add legs and although Whistler tolerated his intervention at the time, he later wrote on one impression, "legs not by me, but a fatuous addition by a general practitioner."
