This is the first proof, printed by Whistler in Venice. It seems to have been in Venice that Whistler developed fully the tonal method of printing whcih he had first used in "The Music Room" of 1858. In later impressions of "Nocturne" Whistler filled out with surface ink the "skeleton" of lines loosely indicating the subject. This first proof, however, shows the artist printing with only slight plate tone in order to be able to inspect the line work on the plate, which he went on to modify in the following states.
