(3) s. on tab with butterfly and inscr.; "imp" CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) PRINT WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) PUB Fine Art Society; (London) This work is a cancelled impression of a subject from 'The First Venice Set', or 'Venice, A Series of Twelve Etchings', published by the Fine Art Society, London, from 1880. The site has been identified by Alastair Grieve as close to the Palazzo Gussoni, which is opposite the Ramo de l'Orso, looking south down the Rio de la Fava towards the Ponte San Antonio. It was drawn from a gondola moored at the back of the Case Morosini, at the junction of the Rio del Fontego dei Tedeschi and the Rio de la Fava, Venice. Throughout his career, Whistler was fond of exploring the subject of doorways in a variety of different media. In relation to his Venice etchings, he had ample opportunity to depict the elaborate doorways and archways of the city, while experimenting with chiaroscuro effects, and the contrast of light and shadow, in their mysterious openings and passageways. The etching plate for this work is also in the Hunterian collection (GLAHA 50589). (See also GLAHA 46611/46820/49967).
