Description: | Royal s. in stone with a butterfly; b.l. PRINT WAY, Thomas Robert; (English; 1861-1913) CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) In his second experiment with lithotint, Whistler more successfuly integrated wet and dry media. Although he relied on substantial crayon underdrawing for this image, he clearly had a better understanding of the idiosyncratic behaviour of wash on stone. This is a second state lithotint. Crayon lines suggesting a foot projecting from beneath the model's skirt have been removed.
