(3) Watermark; "B" CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) PRINT WAY, Thomas Robert; (English; 1861-1913) This lithograph was printed by Thomas Way. In the early 1890s, Whistler produced a series of pastels, watercolours, drawings, etchings and lithographs of lightly draped models posing with a young child. He made five lithographic versions of the theme and assigned them, and some of his variations in other media, the title "Mother and Child". The subjects of this group of works were probably one or more of the three Pettigrew sisters, favourite models of Whistler's, and their young niece. (See also GLAHA 49126/49127/49446).
