Description: | Unmounted s. in stone with butterfly; u.r. CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) PRINT GOULDING, Frederick (English; 1842-1909) This is a posthumous printing. After Whistler?s death in 1903, his heir and sister-in-law, Rosalind Birnie Philip, commissioned the London printer, Frederick Goulding, to print posthumous editions of many of Whistler?s lithographs. Between October 1903 and May 1904, Goulding pulled impressions from 94 stones and transferred and printed 10 previously untransferred lithographic drawings. Rue de Grenelle crosses rue du Bac only two blocks from Whistler?s home at 110 rue du Bac and this greengrocer?s shop was undoubtedly within easy walking distance. The scene is light-filled and animated, with a customer examining the goods outside the shop, while the female shop assistant is seen through the open doorway. When Whistler sent this image to London to be printed by Thomas Way, his accompanying letter informed Way that the drawing was "simplicity itself - most direct - and with no fumbling and retouching". When the first proofs arrived back from the printers, Whistler continued to be pleased. (See also GLAHA 49595).
