Description: | Louis XV frame, carved and gilded ogee section frame with lambs tongue sight mou CRE FRENCH SCHOOL; (17th century) ATTR POUSSIN, Nicolas; (French; 1594-1665) ATTR POERSON, Charles; (1609-1667) ATTR PERRIER, Francois; (c.1590-1650) ATTR LIONE, Andrea di; (Italian; 1610-1685) Dr. Hunter bought this 'poetically imagined' work - as well as a pastiche of Poussin's Annunciation - from Robert Strange in 1771. Strange's taste was normally reliable, and he put twelve paintings attributed to Poussin into his sales between 1771 and 1775. It is a reminder of what Hunter and his contemporaries admired most in Poussin: his knowledge of ancient art. Through his followers, Poussin played an important role in the creation of French Royal Academy doctrine, and he was an essential figure among the models recommended by Reynolds, who owned numerous examples of his work including the London National Gallery's Adoration.
Books in Hunter's library reflected a strong interest in French art and academic practice. In addition to prints of Le Brun's Passions (GLAHA 9268-9278), and engravings of Poussin's Sacraments (GLAHA 17092), he accumulated an important group of theoretical works influenced by Poussin, including Bosse's Le Peintre Converty Aux Précises et Universelles Règles De Son Art (1667). Although recognisably Poussinesque this sketch is not related to any surviving works by Poussin, and its authorship is most likely to be found in the work of a follower such as Charles Le Brun. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | EGYPT : BIBLE : PAGAN GOD : NEW TESTAMENT : DONKEY : PALM TREE : STRANGE : HUNTER 2007 : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
