Description: | RH inscr. in plate b.c. "HUMANI / GENERIS / REDEMPTO / RI"; stamped v. [] CRE MANTEGNA, Andrea; (Italian; 1431-1506) Bartsch 3. According to Bartsch this is one of seven works engraved by Mantegna himself. Despite previous speculation that there were four states of this print (Washington) it has since been shown that there are only two, and this is the second. The plate is of importance as it was produced during a period of great experimentation for Mantegna. It illustrates his first use of the burin combined with drypoint to achieve a wider range of tonality. The burin meant that deeper, crisper lines could be achieved whilst drypoint was used for the lighter tones.
