Description: | IH Recto: "Cum Privilegio - 1565 - Titianus"; collector's mark b.l. of Sir Thomas Lawrence (Lugt 2446). Verso: insc. in ink "P.Mariette 1678", and "Louis Chauveau". CRE CORT, Cornelis; (Dutch; 1533-1578) AFTER TITIAN (Tiziano Vecelli); (Italian; 1480/85-1576) "The scene represented is loosely based on Lodovico Ariosto's great epic romance poem Orlando Furioso of 1532. Angelica lies at the mercy of a dragon, while from the cloud above springs forth her rescuer, the knight Ruggiero, mounted on a mythical beast called a hippogryph. The print follows closely a detailed pen and ink drawing by Titian in the Musée Bonnat, Bayonne (see illustration), although the design was reversed in the printing process. Titian established a very fruitful collaboration with the highly talented Netherlandish engraver Cornelis Cort, who made six prints after his designs in the years 1565-6, of which this is one. This is an example of the first state of the print, in which only Titian's role, not Cort's, is acknowledged in the inscriptions."
