CRE MACKINTOSH, Charles Rennie; (Scottish; 1868-1928) 'The Wassail' gesso panel is by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, for Miss Cranston's Ingram Street tea rooms. 'Wassailing' was an ancient British custom practised at Christmas time, at which people made merry and gave offerings of food and drink. 'Wassail' was a toast, derived from the Saxon "waes hael" meaning "good health".
