Description: | CRE MACKINTOSH, Charles Rennie; (Scottish; 1868-1928) The majority of pages contain drawings of buildings and architectural details. These belong to a trip to Norfolk in 1896 and possibly to a further visit to the county in 1897 when he also sketched in Suffolk. In Norfolk he visited Cawston, Hoveton, Little Walsingham, North Elmham and Worstead. In Suffolk he sketched at Blythburgh, Bramfield, Halesworth, Framlingham, Reydon, South Cove, Southwold, Uggeshall, Wangford and Wenhaston. The visit to Suffolk was perhaps encouraged by Francis Newbery, Director of the Glasgow School of Art, who had a holiday home in Walberswick, Suffolk. Mackintosh later spent over a year in Walberswick focused on flower painting, from 1914 to 1915. Other sketches from Norfolk are contained in sketchbook 53014. In 1898, Mackintosh travelled to Devon where he sketched at Ashburton, Exeter, Stoke Gabriel, and Tavistock. The sketchbook includes a small group of botanical studies and sketches of York Minster. There are also several pages of designs for furniture and decoration, including proposals for Miss Cranston's tea rooms in Argyle Street and Ingram Street, Glasgow. Dated pages range from 1896 to 1901. The numbering on the pages is a later addition. Blank pages have not been recorded.
Twelve Mackintosh sketchbooks are recorded: Hunterian, 6; The Glasgow School of Art, 2; the National Library of Ireland, 3; and Private Collection, 1. In addition the Hunterian has 74 pages from dismembered sketchbooks recording other trips to England between 1895 and 1905. Other pages, particularly from the Italian tour of 1891, are held in various public and private collections. The conservation, digitisation and cataloguing of the Hunterian sketchbooks were supported by a grant from Museums Galleries Scotland in 2010 - 2011.
