Description: | inscr. in pencil on front cover "C.R. MACKINTOSH / 257 WEST GEORGE ST / GLASGOW" and b.l. some calculations CRE MACKINTOSH, Charles Rennie; (Scottish; 1868-1928) The majority of the drawings are architectural from trips to England, with one botanical drawing, and one sketch from Perthshire. There are sketches from Norfolk, most probably dating from 1897 (Cawston, Salle, Swanton Abbott, Westwick, Worstead - which probably belong to the tour also recorded in 53014) and two, after 1906, of Norwich. There are also drawings from Kent and Sussex made in 1909 (Cowden, Groombridge, Withyham) and Kent in 1910 (Chiddingstone, Hever, Leigh, Penshurst). The highlight of the sketchbook is the group of studies of Chiddingstone's beautiful half-timbered main street. Two pages have drawings of Walberswick, Suffolk, in 1914; Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald lived there for15 months from 1914. There are also designs for various projects, including Miss Cranston's tea rooms and her home, Hous'hill, Nitshill, Glasgow; 78 Derngate for W.J. Bassett-Lowke; and, intriguingly, for a new village square near Killearn, Stirlingshire. The numbering on the pages is a later addition. Blank pages have not been recorded.
Twelve Mackintosh sketchbooks are recorded: Hunterian, 6; The Glasgow School of Art, 2; the National Library of Ireland, 3; and Private Collection, 1. In addition the Hunterian has 74 pages from dismembered sketchbooks recording other trips to England between 1895 and 1905. Other pages, particularly from the Italian tour of 1891, are held in various public and private collections. The conservation, digitisation and cataloguing of the Hunterian sketchbooks were supported by a grant from Museums Galleries Scotland in 2010 - 2011.
