Description: | DES MACKINTOSH, Charles Rennie (Scottish: 1868 - 1928) The chair was one of a set of four identical to this, and a high-back version (Museum of Fine Art, Richmond, Virginia, US) designed for the drawing room at Miss Cranston's home. The room also served as a music room. The chair illustrates key elements of Mackintosh's most successful furniture: a sophisticated formal design combined with an architectural and symbolic role in the overall scheme. The elegant back reiterates the fin-like construction of the screen and its dark-stained finish provides a valuable black note in the white interior. The single glass inset in the back can be read as an evocation of musical notation.
