CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) PRINT WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) In the later part of the nineteenth century, many of the old wooden bridges spanning the Thames were being systematically replaced with new feats of Victorian engineering. Whistler's interest in these bridges stemmed partly from his knowledge of Japanese prints by Hiroshige, whose Tokaido series included beautiful wooden bridges which marked poetic transitions along a journey. He may also have been prompted by a desire to preserve a record of the original bridges for future generations. This nostalgia had informed the Eaux-fortes sur Paris of Charles Meryon which Whistler knew well. This etching was published by the Fine Art Society in 1879, the year of Whistler's departure for Venice, and it was the last work of his to be exhibited at the Royal Academy in his lifetime.
