(4) Collector's mark pencil crown (Lugt 2921h) CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) Several years after producing his 'Thames Set' etchings, Whistler returned to the River Thames as a subject for both etching and lithography. In "Battersea, Dawn" (1875) Whistler probably worked with a diamond-tipped needle in order to achieve the thinnest possible lines. The ghostly atmosphere of the printed work successfully evokes the half-light of dawn, reflecting ideas already explored by Whistler in such works as "Nocturne: Blue and Silver - Cremorne Lights" (Y115) Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University. The copper plate for this work is also in the Hunterian. (See GLAHA 50550). Purchased from P. & D. Colnaghi in May 1967. The print bears a pencil mark on the recto, which depicts a crown or possibly a Japanese character. Its meaning is not explained by Lugt, and it may be Whistler's code for special impressions reserved for the Royal Library.
