"71 [circled]" CRE BARTOLOZZI, Francesco; (Italian; 1725-1815) AFTER Franceschini, Marcantonio; (Italian; 1648-1729) PUB DALTON, Richard (English; 1715-1791) This print is one of a set of 16 by Bartolozzi from William Hunter's bequest. In 1764 Bartolozzi, hailed as Italy's best engraver, had come to England to work for Richard Dalton, Librarian to George III, on a series of 82 prints after drawings by Guercino from the Royal Collection. Following this, Bartolozzi produced a further 33 prints after drawings by other Italian masters, of which this is one. Dalton published these in small sets over the next five years.
Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and nature's fruitfulness is often depicted as a child drinking wine. It is one of a pair of drawings by Franceschini (see Glaha 8964), a leading figure of the Bolognese school of painting working in the Baroque tradition established by the Carracci. He was particularly accomplished in elaborate decorative compositions such as these. Figures such as satyrs and putti often featured in decorative drawings without narrative or connection to frescos or paintings (see also Glaha 8962 and 8964). It was complex engravings such as these that established Bartolozzi's reputation in England. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | DRAWING : BOYS : IMITATION : BARREL : WINE : MUSIC : HUNTER VOLUME : CHILD : BACCHUS : WINDSOR : ROYAL COLLECTION : BAROQUE : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
