"58[circled]" CRE BARTOLOZZI, Francesco; (Italian; 1725-1815) AFTER FRANCESCHINI, Marcantonio; (Italian; 1548-1629) PUB DALTON, Richard (English; 1715-1791) This print is one of a set of 16 by Bartolozzi from William Hunter's bequest. In 1764 Bartolozzi, hailed as Italy's best engraver, had come to England to work for Richard Dalton, Librarian to George III, on a series of 82 prints after drawings by Guercino from the Royal Collection. Following this, Bartolozzi produced a further 33 prints after drawings by other Italian masters, of which this is one. Dalton published these in small sets over the next five years.
This is one of a pair of drawings by Franceschini (see Glaha 8953), a leading figure of the Bolognese school of painting working in the Baroque tradition established by the Carracci. He was particularly accomplished in elaborate decorative compositions such as these. Satyrs were spirits of the wood and mountain from Greek mythology who, by the Renaissance, personified lust. Figures such as satyrs and putti often featured in decorative drawings without narrative or connection to frescos or paintings (see Glaha 8962 and 8964).
