Published by Charles Rogers (1711-1784), an eminent eighteenth century collector, it consists of 112 prints accompanied by introductory texts on the artists represented. It highlights the wealth of old master drawings held in contemporary private British collections and is among the most impressive art historical writings of 18th century England.
Rosa's drawing belonged to the sculptor John Michael Rysbrack, a friend of Rogers who lent three drawings from his vast collection for the publication. Rogers acquired part of Rysbrack's collection after his death.
In this case, two figure studies have been etched on one plate. In his notes to the print, Rogers mentions that Salvator Rosa himself made an etching of the drawing of the bottom soldier.
Rosa (1615-1673) was a highly original artist whose dramatic landscapes became very popular in England toward the end of the 18th century. He had a fiery personality which Rogers described extensively in his text. This is one of four of his drawings represented in the volume (Glaha 8977, 9015, 9086). | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | SOLDIER : CAVALIER : IMITATION : DRAWING : RYSBRACK : STUDY : HUNTER VOLUME : REPRODUCTIVE : SWORD : PLUME : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
