Published by Charles Rogers (1711-1784), an eminent eighteenth century collector, it consists of 112 prints accompanied by introductory texts on the artists represented. It highlights the wealth of old master drawings held in contemporary private British collections and is among the most impressive art historical writings of 18th century England.
Guercino's drawing belonged to the leading portrait painter Joshua Reynolds. Owner of the greatest collections of old master drawings and paintings in the country, Reynolds firmly believed in the importance of studying the old masters. He lent 15 drawings for Rogers' project.
Clio was one of the nine muses in Greek mythology. She was the patron goddess of history and is usually depicted with a book or scroll in which the events of history are written. The hour glasses held by the putti symbolise the passage of time.
The drawings of Bolognese painter Guercino were among the most sought after by eighteenth century collectors in England and Rogers included 10 in his volume. They were admired for their energy and their appeal was no doubt increased by George III's acquisition of more than 800 of his drawings in the early 1760s. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | WOMAN : IMITATION : DRAWING : MUSE : HISTORY : HUNTER VOLUME : TIME : ALLEGORY : REPRODUCTIVE : BAROQUE : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
