Published by Charles Rogers (1711-1784), an eminent eighteenth century collector, it consists of 112 prints accompanied by introductory texts on the artists represented. It highlights the wealth of old master drawings held in contemporary private British collections and is among the most impressive art historical writings of 18th century England.
This is one of 42 from Rogers' own collection, one of the best in the country.
The cross carried by the angel is one of the 25 instruments of the Passion of Christ - objects associated with Christ's crucifixion. Bernini was commissioned to design sculptures of ten of the instruments to adorn a bridge over the Tiber in Rome (see also Glaha 9005).
The sculptor Bernini was one of the three leading figures of the Roman Baroque. His work was well known to eighteenth century connoisseurs and Rogers keeps his notes on him to a minimum referring the reader to other texts. This is one of three drawings by Bernini represented in the volume (Glaha 9005, 8984). The attribution of all three has since been questioned. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | CROSS : ANGEL : IMITATION : DRAWING : HUNTER VOLUME : PASSION : REPRODUCTIVE : DESIGN : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
