CRE RYLAND, William, Wynne; (English; 1732-1783) AFTER CARRACCI, Annibale; (Italian; 1560-1609) PUB ROGERS, Charles; (English; 1711-1784) This unbound volume is part of William Hunter's original bequest. It was published by Charles Rogers (1711-1784), an eminent eighteenth century connoisseur. The finished work consisted of 112 prints accompanied by introductory texts on the artists represented. It highlighted the wealth of old master drawings held in private British collections at the time and has been described as one of the most impressive art historical writings of 18th century England.
The original drawing by Annibale Carracci belonged to Nathaniel Hone (1718-1784). Hone was a portrait painter and enthusiastic art collector and owned drawings by a number of old masters. Rogers selected nine drawings by members of the Carracci family. The works of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico were highly regarded in the 18th century. Although they had always been popular, George III' s acquisition of three volumes of their drawings in 1762 undoubtedly increased their appeal to connoisseurs.
In his notes to the print, Rogers remarks on the popularity of the Holy Family as subject matter suggesting it to be such that the Virgin Mary might be considered "benefactress and supporter of the modern Painters". | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | FAMILY : RELIGION : IMITATION : DRAWING : HUNTER VOLUME : MADONNA : REPRODUCTIVE : VIRGIN MARY : CHRIST : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
