CRE RYLAND, William, Wynne; (English; 1732-1783) AFTER BANDINELLI, Baccio; (Italian; 1493-1560) PUB ROGERS, Charles; (English; 1711-1784) This unbound volume is part of William Hunter's original bequest. Published by Charles Rogers (1711-1784), an eminent eighteenth century collector, it consists of 112 prints accompanied by introductory texts on the artists represented. It highlights the wealth of old master drawings held in contemporary private British collections and is among the most impressive art historical writings of 18th century England.
Bandinelli's drawing belonged to the leading portrait painter Joshua Reynolds. Owner of the greatest collections of old master drawings and paintings in the country, Reynolds firmly believed in the importance of studying the old masters and lent 15 drawings to Rogers' project.
Bandinelli was a sculptor and a jealous rival of Michelangelo. In his notes on the artist, Rogers writes at length about Bandinelli's disputes with other artists for which he became as well known as for his artistic output. However, his drawings were outstanding and for this reason, Rogers claims, he should be numbered among the great masters. This is the only drawing by Bandinelli represented in the volume. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | : : IMITATION : DRAWING : REYNOLDS : HUNTER VOLUME : STUDY : REPRODUCTIVE : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
