Published by Charles Rogers (1711-1784), an eminent eighteenth century collector, it consists of 112 prints accompanied by introductory texts on the artists represented. It highlights the wealth of old master drawings held in contemporary private British collections and is among the most impressive art historical writings of 18th century England.
Guercino's drawing belonged to the sculptor John Michael Rysbrack, a friend of Rogers who lent three drawings from his vast collection to the publication. Rogers acquired part of Rysbrack's collection after his death.
Saint Francis, founder of the Franciscan order, lived in the early years of the 13th century. As a young man he is said to have heard a crucifix command him to go and rebuild God's house. He is often depicted with a crucifix and a skull, in reference to his constant contemplation of death.
The drawings of Bolognese painter Guercino were among the most sought after by eighteenth century collectors in England and Rogers included 10 in his volume. They were admired for their energy and their appeal was no doubt increased by George III's acquisition of more than 800 of his drawings in the early 1760s. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | RELIGION : FRANCIS : IMITATION : DRAWING : RYSBRACK : SKULL : PRAYER : CRUCIFIX : LEGENDA SANCTORUM : STUDY : HUNTER VOLUME : RELIGIOUS : REPRODUCTIVE : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
