Published by Charles Rogers (1711-1784), an eminent eighteenth century collector, it consists of 112 prints accompanied by introductory texts on the artists represented. It highlights the wealth of old master drawings held in contemporary private British collections and is among the most impressive art historical writings of 18th century England.
Franco's drawing belonged to the leading portrait painter Joshua Reynolds. Owner of the greatest collections of old master drawings and paintings in the country, Reynolds firmly believed in the importance of studying the old masters. He lent 15 drawings for Rogers' project.
Primarily a printer and draughtsman who trained in Rome, Franco began making drawings after Michelangelo's work early in his career and was strongly influenced by him. His skill as a draughtsman was greatly admired by eighteenth century connoisseurs. This is one of three drawings by him represented in the volume (Glaha 8981, 9076)
Although Rogers was unable to name the subject of this drawing he identified the kneeling figure's origins in an antique sculpture and discussed the identity of the figure in that setting. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | FIGURE : IMITATION : DRAWING : REYNOLDS : HUNTER VOLUME : REPRODUCTIVE : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
