Published by Charles Rogers (1711-1784), an eminent eighteenth century collector, it consists of 112 prints accompanied by introductory texts on the artists represented. It highlights the wealth of old master drawings held in contemporary private British collections and is among the most impressive art historical writings of 18th century England.
The original Raphael drawing for this print was brought to Britain from Holland by one of the Richardsons, a family of distinguished connoisseurs, circa 1720. When Rogers came to have it engraved, it belonged to the leading portrait painter Joshua Reynolds (1728-1792) who regarded Raphael "foremost of the first painters". Owner of the greatest collections of old master drawings and paintings in the country, Reynolds firmly believed in the importance of studying the old masters. He lent 15 drawings for Rogers' project. The drawing is now in the British Museum. It is probably a figure study for a larger composition. This is one of five drawings by Raphael represented in the volume (Glaha 9008, 9024, 9079, 9080). | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | SOLDIER : IMITATION : DRAWING : REYNOLDS : HUNTER VOLUME : STUDY : REPRODUCTIVE : NUDE : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
