Published by Charles Rogers (1711-1784), an eminent eighteenth century collector, it consists of 112 prints accompanied by introductory texts on the artists represented. It highlights the wealth of old master drawings held in contemporary private British collections and is among the most impressive art historical writings of 18th century England.
Both Parmigianino drawings belonged to the leading portrait painter Joshua Reynolds. 'The Good Samaritan' had previously belonged to the great collector Jonathan Richardson. Once in Britain, drawings often circulated within a small group of connoisseurs.
In Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan a traveller was attacked by bandits and left for dead. Several fellow Jews passed him without offering help but a Samaritan ,(an ethnic group despised by Jews) tended to his wounds and took him to an inn to recover.
Parmigianino's work was very popular in the 18th century. From the city of Parma, he worked in the mannerist style and was influenced by Correggio, also from Parma. Both were greatly admired for their drawing skills. There is one other drawing by Parmigianino in the volume. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | RELIGION : DEATH : PHILOPSOPHER : IMITATION : DRAWING : REYNOLDS : REPRODUCTIVE : HUNTER VOLUME : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
