Published by Charles Rogers (1711-1784), an eminent eighteenth century collector, it consists of 112 prints accompanied by introductory texts on the artists represented. It highlights the wealth of old master drawings held in contemporary private British collections and is among the most impressive art historical writings of 18th century England.
Parmigiano's drawing belonged to the politician George, 3rd Earl of Cholmondeley (1703-1770) who lent four drawings to Rogers' project.
The famous story of David and Goliath is told in the Old Testament. Goliath was the champion of the Philistine army and the Israelites were terrified of him. Only the young shepherd David came forward to fight him, armed with just a sling. He killed Goliath striking his forehead with a stone, beheading him with his own sword, causing the Philistine army to flee.
Parmigianino's work was very popular in the 18th century. From the city of Parma, he worked in the mannerist style and was influenced by Correggio, also from Parma. Both were greatly admired for their drawing skills. There are two other drawings by Parmigianino represented in the volume. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | RELIGION : OLD TESTAMENT : DEATH : IMITATION : DRAWING : CHOLMONDELEY : HUNTER VOLUME : ARMY : REPRODUCTIVE : SOLDIER : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
