Description: | I unmounted "Nicolus Poussin Pinx.t Robertus Strange delin.t et sculp.t Londini, 1759 Herculis Judicium The Judgement of Hercules. E Tablua Nicolai Poussin, 3 pedes alta, 2 pedes et 4 digitos lata, in pinacotheca Henrici Hoare ermigeri conservata. From the painting of Nicolas Poussin, 3 feet high by 2 feet 4 inches wide, in the collection of Henry Hoare Esq.r" CRE STRANGE, Robert, Sir; (Scottish; 1721-1792) AFTER POUSSIN, Nicolas; (French; 1592-1635) State III/III. The painting was in the collection of Henry Hoare of Stourhead, Wiltshire. This engraving is from the group recorded by Laskey in 1813 as hanging framed on the stairs in the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow. It is possible that Hunter had himself displayed framed engravings by Strange in his Museum in Gt Windmill Street, London. Strange and Hunter had a long association, since Hunter's student days in Edinburgh in the 1730s. Strange travelled extensively in Italy studying art, making drawings of great paintings to engrave. He also bought paintings which he sold in London in auctions between 1769 and 1772, carefully time to coincide with the exhibitions of the Royal Academy and Incorporated and Free Societies of Artists. Many of Hunter's best acquisitions were from Strange's auctions. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | MYTHOLOGY : REPRODUCTIVE : LION SKIN : VERTUE : PLEASURE : JUDGEMENT : OAK CROWN : HUNTER 2007 : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
