Published by Charles Rogers (1711-1784), an eminent eighteenth century collector, it consists of 112 prints accompanied by introductory texts on the artists represented. It highlights the wealth of old master drawings held in contemporary private British collections and is among the most impressive art historical writings of 18th century England.
In this case, two drawings have been etched on the same plate. Both of them were in the Royal collection and in his notes Rogers's makes some detailed comments on the group of Domenichino drawings in that collection, which totalled 1,700. He lists the previous owners and describes their arrangement in 34 volumes. He records that this task was undertaken by the King's Librarian, Richard Dalton, 'with the greatest judgement'. These two are the only landscapes included in Rogers' publication.
Born in Bologna, Domenichino studied at the Carracci's Academy and spent much time copying Annibale's work. He went on to become a great leader in the classical style . There is one other drawing by him in the volume (Glaha 8976). | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | LANDSCAPE : DRAWING : IMITATION : ITALY : WINDSOR : HUNTER VOLUME : ROYAL COLLECTION : REPRODUCTIVE : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
