Published by Charles Rogers (1711-1784), an eminent eighteenth century collector, it consists of 112 prints accompanied by introductory texts on the artists represented. It highlights the wealth of old master drawings held in contemporary private British collections and is among the most impressive art historical writings of 18th century England.
Rembrandt's drawing passed through the collections of some of England's most distinguished connoisseurs, listed by Rogersin his text. When engraved for this publication, it was in the collection of Ralph Willett.
The subject is four Turkish men seated in the shade of a tree drinking coffee. One is expounding a passage in the Koran, another listening, another is using prayer beads and the fourth is singing.
Rembrandt was as much admired in the 18th century as he is today. There was a keen interest in Dutch artists in Rogers' circle, partly due to the influence of Arthur Pond who had encouraged many of them at the start of their collecting careers. Rogers included 8 drawings by him in the volume. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | PERSIAN : COFFEE : GENRE : CONVERSATION : DRAWING : IMITATION : WILLET : HUNTER VOLUME : RELIGION : REPRODUCTIVE : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
