CRE WATTS, Simon; (English; act 1760-1780) AFTER REMBRANDT, Harmenz van Rijn; (Dutch; 1606-1669) PUB ROGERS, Charles; (English; 1711-1784) This unbound volume is part of William Hunter's original bequest. Published by Charles Rogers (1711-1784), an eminent eighteenth century collector, it consists of 112 prints accompanied by introductory texts on the artists represented. It highlights the wealth of old master drawings held in contemporary private British collections and is among the most impressive art historical writings of 18th century England.
Owned by some of the most distinguished artist collectors in Britain, this study was obviously of interest to artists. When engraved for Rogers it belonged to the portrait painter and collector Thomas Hudson (1701-1779) who lent another nine drawings to Rogers, including three by Rembrandt.
The drawing relates the New Testament story in which Jesus raises the young daughter of the Roman soldier Jairus to life. Rogers observes that Rembrandt has not accurately represented the girl's age.
There was a keen interest in Rembrandt and other Dutch artists in Rogers' circle, partly due to the influence of Arthur Pond who had encouraged many of them at the start of their collecting careers. Joshua Reynolds was at times critical of Rembrandt's adherence to nature but he came to greatly admire him and had a number of his works in his collection. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | RELIGION : PARABLE : DRAWING : IMITATION : MIRACLE : SICK : HUDSON : JAIRUS : NEW TESTAMENT : JESUS : HUNTER VOLUME : REPRODUCTIVE : DEATH : BIBLICAL : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
