CRE WATTS, Simon; (English; act 1760-1780) AFTER CARAVAGGIO, (Michelangelo Merisi); (Italian; 1573-1610) PUB ROGERS, Charles; (English; 1711-1784) This unbound volume is part of William Hunter's original bequest. Published by Charles Rogers (1711-1784), an eminent eighteenth century collector, it consists of 112 prints accompanied by introductory texts on the artists represented. It highlights the wealth of old master drawings held in contemporary private British collections and is among the most impressive art historical writings of 18th century England.
Caravaggio's drawing belonged to portrait painter and collector Thomas Hudson (1701-1779) who lent another nine drawings to Rogers, a number surpassed only by his former pupil Joshua Reynolds who lent 15.
In his notes Rogers speculates about the subject of the study, suggesting that the seated figures may be dreaming or depictions of invalids waiting to get into healing waters or simply some country men for one of his larger compositions.
Caravaggio, who spent most of his career in Rome, was Annibale Caracci's main rival. He was famed for his uncompromising realism and had many followers well in to the 17th century. This is the only drawing by him in the volume. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | : STUDY : DRAWING : IMITATION : HUDSON : HUNTER VOLUME : REPRODUCTIVE : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
