CRE WATTS, Simon; (English; act 1760-1780) AFTER FAGE, Raymond de La; (French; 1650-1684) PUB ROGERS, Charles; (English; 1711-1784) This unbound volume is part of William Hunter's original bequest. Published by Charles Rogers (1711-1784), an eminent eighteenth century collector, it consists of 112 prints accompanied by introductory texts on the artists represented. It highlights the wealth of old master drawings held in contemporary private British collections and is among the most impressive art historical writings of 18th century England. This is one of 42 drawings from Rogers' own collection, one of the best in the country.
It depicts the smithy of Vulcan, the Roman god of destructive fire, who was associated with the manufacturer of armour, arms and jewellery. The smithy was said to be underneath Mount Etna. Venus, Vulcan's wife can be seen standing amidst the hammering men. In his notes to the print, Rogers quotes lines from Virgil which describe Vulcan's smithy.
Primarily a draughtsman Lafage's work was collected by leading French drawing collector Pierre Crozat (1665-1740). This is the only example of his work in the volume. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | MYTHOLOGY : GOD : IMITATION : DRAWING : WEAPON : METAL : SMITH : VULCAN : ANVIL : ARMOUR : ARMS : VIRGIL : HUNTER VOLUME : REPRODUCTIVE : PAGAN : CLASSICAL : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
