Description: | IU, unmounted s. on plate b. r. "Sim Watts sct. 1767"; inscr. on plate b. l. "Giulio Romano delt."; inscr. on plate b. c. "Victoria / Apd. Cr Editm." CRE WATTS, Simon; (English; act 1760-1780) AFTER ROMANO, Giulio; (Italian; 1499-1546) PUB ROGERS, Charles; (English; 1711-1784) This unbound volume is part of William Hunter's original bequest. Published by Charles Rogers (1711-1784), an eminent eighteenth century collector, it consists of 112 prints accompanied by introductory texts on the artists represented. It highlights the wealth of old master drawings held in contemporary private British collections and is among the most impressive art historical writings of 18th century England.
This is one of 42 drawings from Rogers' own collection, one of the best in the country. It shows an allegorical figure of victory reaching out to crown her hero while holding the horn of plenty. In his notes, Rogers discusses various depictions of victory and suggests that Giulio Romano copied this figure from an antique sculptural relief.
Giulio Romano was one of Raphael's most capable students and for this reason alone would have been of great interest to eighteenth century collectors. He became a great fresco painter in his own right and his drawings were very highly accomplished. This is one of two drawings by Romano represented in the volume (Glaha 9078). | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | MYTHOLOGY : VICTORY : ALLEGORY : WING : IMITATION : DRAWING : HUNTER VOLUME : REPRODUCTIVE : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
