Description: | I s.inscr. in plate b.r. "J. Mitchell sculpsit Impensis R & A. Foulis"; inscr. b.l. "From a drawing after Raphael"; inscr. b.c. "To his excellencey Sir Joseph Yorke Knight of the Bath His Majesty's Embassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the States General. This plate is inscribed in remembrance of his protection which vanquished the unforseen obstacles to establishing an Academy of the fine arts in the University, Glasgow 1768" CRE MITCHELL, James; (Scottish; act 1766-1773) PUB FOULIS, Robert and Andrew AFTER RAPHAEL, Raffaello Santi; (Italian; 1483-1520) The plate was dedicated to Sir Joseph Yorke, Ambassador to The Hague from 1761 and an early patron of the Foulis Academy. Mitchell was working from a drawing of a Raphael's painting then in the collection of the King of Naples, that could have been made by one of his fellow students who travelled to Italy. The drawing could also have come from Robert Strange, a supporter of the Foulis Academy, who was in Naples in 1760, where he was granted permission to draw paintings from the King's Palace. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | RELIGION : BIBLE : FIGURE : MALE : FEMALE : INFANT : HOLY FAMILY : SAINT : JOHN THE BAPTIST : FOULIS ACADEMY : UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW : HUNTER 2007 : MG1 2007 : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
