PUB ROGERS, Charles; (English; 1711-1784) CRE HEBERT, William; (English; 18th century) AFTER REMBRANDT, Harmensz van Rijn; (Dutch; 1606-1669) This unbound volume is part of William Hunter's original bequest. Published by Charles Rogers (1711-1784), an eminent eighteenth century collector, it consists of 112 prints accompanied by introductory texts on the artists represented. It highlights the wealth of old master drawings held in contemporary private British collections and is among the most impressive art historical writings of 18th century England.
Rembrandt's drawing was in the collection of leading portrait painter Joshua Reynolds who firmly believed in the importance of studying the old masters. He lent 15 drawings for Rogers' project.
The drawing shows a youth boasting about his exploits to his parents. By the expressions on their faces, the father naively believes him, while the mother seems dubious. In his notes, Rogers refers to Rembrandt's interest in nature over the sublime in any subject he undertook.
There was a keen interest in Rembrandt and other Dutch artists in Rogers' circle, partly due to the influence of Arthur Pond who had encouraged many of them at the start of their collecting careers. Reynolds himself was at times critical of Rembrandt's adherence to nature although he came to greatly admire him and had a number of his works in his collection. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | GENRE : COTTAGE : DUTCH : REYNOLDS : IMITATION : DRAWING : HUNTER VOLUME : REPRODUCTIVE : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
