Boydell Excudt / Mr Garrick in the Farmer's Return / Published according to Act of Parliament March 1st 1766 by J. Boydell Engraver, in Cheapside, LONDON" CRE HAID, Johann-Godfried; (German; 1710-1776) AFTER ZOFFANY, Johan; (German; 1733-1810) PRINT Boydell, J PUB Boydell, J From an interlude written by Garrick in which the farmer tells 'the story of his supoposed adventure with the Cock Lane ghost'. According to Whitley, p.180, Zoffany exhibited his painting of this subject at the Spring Gardens exhibition of 1761, no. 138. An article in the St James's Chronicle identifies the passage of the interlude represented, describing it as 'a most accurate representation on canvas of that scene as performed at Drury Lane. The painter absolutely transports us in imagination back again to the theatre. We see our favourite Garrick in the act of saying, for yes, she knocked once- and for no she knocked twice.
