Description: | AtH s. b.r. "J. Finlayson fect."; Inscr. b.c. "Published Novr 1st 1768"; inscr. b.l. "J. Zoffany pinxt" CRE FINLAYSON, John; (English; 1730-1776) AFTER ZOFFANY, Johan; (English; 1733-1810) From a group of theatrical mezzotints in the founder, William Hunter's collection. By 1762 Hunter and Zoffany would have known one another through the royal household as well as through the Society of Arts. Friends they had in common included David Garrick (Hereford 1717-1779 London), who commissioned Zoffany to make paintings of himself on stage. The mezzotints that were subsequently published of these extremely successful performances made the artist's reputation. Hunter's brother John was a close friend of Zoffany, as we know from Zoffany's letter from Florence to Joseph Banks, in which he enquires after his friends including 'Mr Hunter.' In this revival of Vanbrugh's 1697 play The Provok'd Wife, Garrick can be seen performing a scene set in Covent Garden outside the entrance to Number 1, Great Piazza, which was the site of the Hunter brothers' home and anatomy school from 1749-1760.From Vanbrugh's comedy, Act IV, Scene 1. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | THEATRE : HUNTER : GARRICK : VANBURGH : HUNTER 2007 : COVENT GARDEN PIAZZA : THEATRICAL PRINT : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
