Published by Charles Rogers (1711-1784), an eminent eighteenth century collector, it consists of 112 prints accompanied by introductory texts on the artists represented. It highlights the wealth of old master drawings held in contemporary private British collections and is among the most impressive art historical writings of 18th century England.
This is one of a pair of portrait studies by Rubens. The other is a self-portrait. Both belonged to portrait painter and collector Thomas Hudson (1701-1779) who lent another eight drawings to Rogers.
In his notes, Rogers observes that Rubens has depicted his wife at around the age of 25, holding the leading-strings of one of her children whom she is teaching to walk.
Rubens was the leading painter of the Baroque in Northern Europe. Although in the 18th century his reputation as a draughtsman had suffered, Reynolds became a strong supporter of his work after viewing it first hand, reviving interest in him among English connoisseurs. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | PORTRAIT : FEMALE : IMITATION : DRAWING : THOMAS HUDSON : HELENA FOURMENT : HELENE FOURMENT : HUNTER VOLUME : REPRODUCTIVE : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
