Replacement frame made by John Davies, 2005 AFTER CANALETTO, Antonio; (Italian; 1697-1768) AFTER VISENTINI, Antonio; (Italian; 1688-1782) CRE LANGMATT MASTER (Italian; 18th century) The gothic church of Santa Maria della Carità , which is the main feature of this composition, became in 1807 part of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, and is now the Galleria dell'Accademia. This is an early copy by one of the many vedutisti working in Venice who reproduced Canaletto's celebrated Venetian views for sale to visitors and as decorative paintings for interiors. Hunter purchased this canvas from Sir Robert Strange, many of whose paintings had been acquired in Italy, so it is almost certainly by a local follower rather than one of Canaletto's English imitators. The origin of Canaletto's image is a painting in the Royal Collection: Venice: The Grand Canal From the Carità Towards the Bacino (Constable-Links 196), painted between 1726 and 1735, when Antonio Visentini made an etched version of the picture, then in Consul Smith's collection. Hunter's painting is in fact freely copied (with differences in the figures, boats and sky) from Visentini's etching, which was published in Prospectus Magni Canalis Venetiarum.
