Description: | s.d. inscr. base "WILLIAM CULLEN M.D. 1786" CRE TASSIE, James; (Scottish; 1735-1799) 1786 William Cullen was the son of the Duke of Hamilton's factor, born at Hamilton in Lanarkshire. In 1744 he was appointed as the first Regius Chair of Medicine at Glasgow and three years later was appointed to the first lectureship in Chemistry. Cullen made discoveries in latent heat that were subsequently developed further by his pupil Joseph Black. Although he made no outstanding discoveries, he was renowned for his teaching skills and considered a leading British physician of the 18th Century.
