Description: | Marked E361, with a small hole toward the point, presumably for display purposes. The highly polished surface is cracked in a few places. CULT unknown Solomon Islands Melanesia The club has been made using very heavy dark wood with fibre binding. It is relatively short with an expanding flattened head and may have been varnished. It bears a great similarity to the Malaita specimen featured in Steven Phelps' 'Art and Artefacts of the Pacific, Africa and the Americas.' It has been included in the Robertson catalogue as 'William Hunter from Captain Cook' on unknown evidence, and the coating of black varnish indicates that it may have been part of the Old Hunterian Collection. This club may also be one of th 'several War Clubs' mentioned in Captain John Laskey's 1813 account of the museum. | License: | http://www.hmag.gla.ac.uk/spirit/rights/ | Publisher: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Rights holder: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Subjects: | JEN : CLUB : PCOOK : : : | Source: | Hunterian Museum | Creator: | Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow | Identifier: | http://www.huntsearch.gla.ac.uk/cgi-bin/... | Language: | en-GB | Go to resource |
