Artist unidentified; formerly attributed either to Richard Wilson, or to School of Longhi or Pompeo Batoni. Sitter unidentified; suggested he could be George Parker, 2nd Earl Macclesfield; or, according to a pencilled inscription in later hand on top stretcher: 'Probably Farquarsson the astronomer'.
