Description: | Oil on canvas. Gillot's painting captures the ceremonial pomp and glamour of the arrival of King George V and Queen Mary at the Paris Opéra on 22 April 1914. The sweep of the Opéra's grand staircase dominates the centre of the composition, providing a focal point for the royal couple standing on the central landing. Gillot was appointed by King George V and Queen Mary to accompany them on their official visit to Paris in 1914. This painting commemorates one of several royal engagements at which the French artist was present. Gillot had previously been present at the coronation of King George V at Westminster Abbey in 1911. | Subjects: | theatre interior genre royal/state visit Queen King George V | Mary of Teck military uniform King 20th century costume opera house/theatre soldier woman dress staircase column lamp ceremonial costume pillar archway fireplace crowd balcony man | Temporal: | 1914 | Source: | Government Art Collection | Creator: | Eugène-Louis Gillot | Identifier: | http://www.gac.culture.gov.uk/work.aspx?... | Go to resource |
