Description: | The Natural Philosophy collection of Historical Scientific Instruments is unique and is described as "one of the most important in the country" (Bennett, 2007). The collection has resulted from the collecting of material that has been in use in the University of Aberdeen, primarily for the purpose of teaching and research and was brought together by a distinguished line of past Professors of Natural Philosophy. Included amongst these are Patrick Copland, James Clerk Maxwell, Nobel Prize winning GP Thomson and RV Jones. The earliest material dates from the mid 18th century and the most recent material from the 21st Century. As a result of its continuity, the collection provides an important material record "charting change in practical and popular scientific culture" (Marsden, 2007). The areas of interest within the collection include: mechanics; optics; electricity and magnetism; sound; heat; astronomy; meteorology; surveying; radiation; X - rays in medicine and crystallography; computing; properties of materials; precision instrumentation; and related subjects. Access to the collection is restricted and all enquiries should be sent to Dr J Reid, the honorary curator.
Super collection: Natural Philosophy Collection.
Sub-collection: Marischal Collection 1822; Astronomy; Acoustics; Magnetism; Heat; Meteorology; Mechanics and Dynamics; Pneumatics and Hydraulics; Optics; Electrical; Metrology; Navigation and Surveying; Research and Teaching; X-ray; Electronics; Electrostatics; Medical Physics; Nuclear Physics; Computing and Calculating; Associated Material.
