Description: | The India collection is large, varied and reflects the interests of Aberdeen University Alumni who visited and served in the British Indian government. Dr W R Sherriffs (1881 - 1964), a graduate of Aberdeen University MA 1903, BSc 1911 DSc 1919, became a Professor of Biology at the Madras Christian College. The correspondence between Professor Reid and himself implies that he was actually collecting some items at Professor Reid's request. The scope of his collections includes musical instruments and household items. The collection also holds 74 pictures of a range of religious scenes and images of the Indian People collected by Peter Shepherd and given to the University by William Watson Campbell. The collection holds 50 Indian Swords, 18 Indian Guns and associated weaponry and armour such as shields, spears and knives. The Indian swords include 29 curved Tulwar blades which often feature decorative embellishment and precious metals. In contrast, items of religious or ceremonial significance are also included in the collection. A Sculpture Stupa fragment of Buddha in mediation from the Kushana period 200 - 400 and in a Gandhara style reflects one of the oldest pieces in the collection. This is accompanied by a number of statues and photographs of Buddha. One of the more recent additions to the collection is a full Indian Civil Service Dress Uniform including sword, which belonged to Sir William Scott Brown. Brown was a graduate of the University of Aberdeen and moved to India as a senior official in India Madras. The uniform was acquired in 2009 as a gift from Ronald Scott Brown.
