Description: | James Gregory was the University of St Andrews's first Professor of Mathematics (1668-1674) and the inventor of the reflecting telescope. He planned to establish an observatory in St Andrews which, if completed, would have been the first in Britain. On 10 June 1673 he was instructed by the University 'to goe for London' and there purchase 'such instruments and utensils as he ... shall judge most necessary and usefull' for the observatory. He sought the advice of John Flamsteed, later the first Astronomer Royal at Greenwich: their correspondence records Gregory's purchase of one of the earliest split seconds clocks and two regulator clocks, all by the renowned clockmaker Joseph Knibb of London, to aid his observations.
All three clocks remain in the University. | Subjects: | SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS ASTRONOMY CLOCK | Source: | University of St Andrews | Address: | KY16 9AJ | Creator: | GREGORY, James | Contributor: | University of St Andrews | Identifier: | PH:C96 | Language: | en-GB | Relation: | MC:C48 |
