Description: | oil painting
A portrait of John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, Rector of the University of St Andrews, 1892-1898. It is a half length portrait which shows Crichton-Stuart standing with his hands clasped together on his chest. He wears the Rector's purple gown with the hood up which is faced and lined with maroon.
Cant's catalogue gives this identification and date. The Dictionary of National Biography noted that a portrait of the Marquis by E.T. Haynes, 1895, was in the Students' Union building in 1901. However, the name of the artist was subsequently lost. The curator of the Hunterian Art Gallery, Martin Hopkinson, suggested that the work was by E.T. Haynes. It must be presumed that this work is by Haynes and is the same portrait of the Marquis of Bute as recorded by Cant and DNB.
Another portrait of the Marquis, also by Haynes, is held by the Hunterian Art Gallery, University of Glasgow. Photograph on file.
Haynes was a landscape, portrait and figure painter. | Publisher: | University of St Andrews | Rights holder: | 47795 | Subjects: | PORTRAIT RECTOR painting | Temporal: | 1895/1895 | Source: | University of St Andrews | Creator: | HAYNES, Edward Trevannyon | Identifier: | HC149 | Language: | en-GB |
